I became a grandmother on June 16, 2014, not only did that day alter my world forever, it gave me a new purpose and perspective on my life. You see, my daughter and son– in– love named their first born after me! Rebecca Claire and I bonded from the moment she entered this world taking her first few breaths.
She, of course, was beautiful and to top it off, was a perfect image of my daughter who was the image of me as a child. I’ll just call that good genes with a Divine author! My joy was uncontainable and God had blessed me beyond measure, however, I soon discovered that being a grandmother came with new responsibilities!
When my own children were born, I wrote the following in the front of my Bible:
My Call as a Mother
We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done…so that the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. Psalm 78:4, 6-7
At the time I wrote those words, I was dedicated to teaching my children the fear of the Lord and to keep all His statutes and commandments as they grew into young adults. However, now as a grandmother, I read this text and knew that God was not finished with me yet. He commanded me to reach out to the next generation – even the children yet to be born and leave a spiritual legacy for many generations to come! Deuteronomy commands us to diligently tell our children and our grandchildren the deeds of the Lord which our eyes have seen and to make them known to future generations. This is God’s plan to pass on His legacy!
Grandchildren offer us the opportunity to “live beyond today!” Who has the primary responsibility to pass on our faith to the next generation? Nowhere in the Bible does it say the church has the primary responsibility. Scripture clearly states that families, specifically parents and grandparents are the means by which our children are to learn to walk with God and learn of His great love for them.
How will I pass on a Godly legacy to my grandchildren? The demonstration of my faithful walk with the Lord and my prayers for them are powerful ways to pass on my faith. I must intentionally communicate how the Lord has changed my heart and the ways I allow Him to guide my life as I place it in His faithful hands. To tell of His mighty works and answers to my prayers will demonstrate the power of walking with Jesus daily. God has commanded us in His Word to do this as an example of His unfailing love for His people!
We have the opportunity to influence and shape the hearts of a future generation by pressing in through the power of prayer and sharing our faith with our children and our grandchildren. Will you join me in taking up the mantle of leaving a spiritual legacy for your grandchildren? Your days will be richly rewarded as you follow God’s commands for your life as you live out your role as a grandmother!
