Did you know 23 million grandparents live in the United States (DJC Communications, 2012)? In just seven years (2020), that number will jump to 80 million. Not only is the grandparent generation growing, they are living longer, healthier lives with a desire to continue to using their gifts for the kingdom of God and leave a faith legacy.
Today’s grandmothers were physically and emotionally engaged as mothers; now, they are driven to continue at that high level of involvement with the next generation. Regardless of their age, current grandmothers seek activities to do with grandchildren especially activities that allow them to follow the Biblical directive to “tell the next generation” (Psalm 78:4).
“Some grandmothers babysit; others push strollers. But every grandma wants to make a difference. “What will be my legacy?” is a refrain that echoes repeatedly through the precious hours we spend with a grandchild. A Christian grandmother knows she is making a difference, because she leaves footprints of faith.
That’s the focus of the new book, Faith Footprints with my Grandchild, written by Dr. Mary Man Simon. It will encourage, support and strengthen the God connection between a grandmother and her grandchild.
Faith Footprints with My Grandchild; 52 Devotions, Activities and Reflections comes from my heart as a grandmother. That’s why topics include relating to a daughter-in-law, competition with “the other” grandma and long-distance grandmothering. Dr. Mary Manz Simon says, “Ideas are child-tested and developmentally appropriate for children of all ages, although I have five grandsons, I’m an educator, too.
This book would make a great gift for grandmother friends or to trigger discussion in senior adult ministry. Faith Footprints equips women to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with children who are precious to them and to God.
